As we get closer and closer to the Dragon Slayers Kickstarter later this year, I wanted to dedicate some posts to the individual classes in the game to show you their unique rulesets. Hopefully you’ll find one that fits your style.
Do you like to go really fast? Do you like to take enemies out in one stylish knife stab? Then you’re a rogue!
Gotta Go Fast
The rogue’s entire kit centers around Speed. In Dragon Slayers, each class has a Speed die that they roll at the start of combat to determine the turn order. Monsters don’t have Speed dice, and instead just have a static Speed score.
The Rogue’s speed die is a d8, much higher than some other the other classes! That’s because the Rogue is all about going faster than their target. Let’s break down how that works and why with their various actions.
Ready Up
Every class has a ready action that they take at the start of combat. The Rogue’s is all about reading the fight. They learn the exact turn order, with specific speed scores. After that, they can decide to either try and increase their own score by rerolling their speed die, or slow down a monster of their choice
Murder
Why this focus on speed? Because that’s how the Rogue determines their damage output! The Murder action is the one Rogues take when they want to take out a monster. They compare their speed score with the monster they are targeting, and deal Harm based on the difference between those scores. The faster the Rogue is than the monster, the more Harm they deal!
Changing Pace
Well what does the Rogue do if they just got unlucky with their Speed? Are they doomed the whole fight? No!
The Rogue’s quick actions allow them to slow down monsters or speed themselves up. It’s an interesting choice. Do you chance increasing your own score, making you more effective against all the monsters. Or, do you choose a single monster to slow down, increasing your effectiveness against them while also making the rest of your team faster than that monster!
Quick Start
If that sounds cool, great news, you can play a Rogue right now! The Dragon Slayers quick start just got launched on itch. You can check out a very incomplete, but very free, version of Dragon Slayers to get a taste of what is to come.
